Description

This dataset contains occurrence records of vascular plants recorded at the margins of 40 water reservoirs located in Gdańsk (Pomeranian Voivodeship, northern Poland). The study was conducted during the 2014 growing season as part of a floristic inventory carried out for a master's thesis at the University of Gdańsk.

Each reservoir was treated as a separate sampling site, including the flood zone and adjacent embankment. The dataset includes species presence data with semi-quantitative abundance estimates. The study aimed to provide a comprehensive inventory of vascular flora, assess species frequency and distribution, including alien and invasive taxa, and evaluate the floristic value of the investigated reservoirs.

Voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of the University of Gdańsk (UGDA).

Data Records

The data in this occurrence resource has been published as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A), which is a standardized format for sharing biodiversity data as a set of one or more data tables. The core data table contains 3,520 records.

This IPT archives the data and thus serves as the data repository. The data and resource metadata are available for download in the downloads section. The versions table lists other versions of the resource that have been made publicly available and allows tracking changes made to the resource over time.

Taxonomic Coverage

The dataset includes vascular plants (Tracheophyta) recorded at reservoir margins.

Sampling Methods

Floristic surveys were conducted during a single growing season in 2014. The surveyed area at each site included the flood zone and the adjacent embankment of the reservoir. Species were identified in the field or collected for further identification using standard taxonomic keys. Semi-quantitative abundance of each species was estimated using a four-degree scale based on the observed number of individuals: 1 – single occurrence (1–10 individuals), 2 – moderately abundant (11–100 individuals), 3 – abundant (101–1000 individuals), 4 – mass occurrence (>1000 individuals)."

Study Extent The study covered 40 water reservoirs located in Gdańsk. Each reservoir was treated as an independent sampling site.
Quality Control Species identification followed standard Central European floras. Nomenclature is consistent with Mirek et al. (2002). Voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of the University of Gdańsk (UGDA).

Method step description:

  1. Site selection: Forty water reservoirs in Gdańsk were selected; each treated as an independent sampling site. Survey area: Flood zone and adjacent embankment at each site were surveyed. Species identification: Plants were identified in the field; specimens requiring verification were collected for lab identification using standard taxonomic keys. Voucher deposition: Representative specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of the University of Gdańsk (UGDA). Abundance estimation: Semi-quantitative abundance recorded on a four-degree scale (1–10, 11–100, 101–1000, >1000 individuals). Quality control: Species identification and nomenclature cross-checked against Mirek et al. (2002).
