Descripción
This dataset contains georeferenced records of natural populations of Hordeum murinum sampled across Europe and North Africa between 2022 and 2024. The sampling localities were established for a large-scale study investigating in-situ variation in reproductive phenology, growth-related traits, and concentrations of elemental nutrients in seeds across broad climatic and environmental gradients.
The dataset includes occurrence and locality information for 207 tetraploid populations sampled across approximately 4500 km of the species’ native distribution range. Populations were located in a wide variety of human-disturbed ruderal habitats, including roadsides, urban green spaces, field margins, vineyards, riverbanks, and fallow land.
For each population, field measurements included plant height, spike number, seed ripening phenology, and local habitat characteristics such as vegetation cover and soil properties. A subset of populations was additionally used for seed elemental nutrient analyses. Cytotype identity of sampled populations was verified using flow cytometry, and only exclusively tetraploid populations were included in the primary analyses associated with the published study.
The dataset was created to document the spatial distribution of sampled populations and to support reproducibility and future macroecological, evolutionary, and ecological analyses of intraspecific trait variation in wild plant species.

Métodos de muestreo
Populations were sampled during the local seed-ripening period between March and August, depending on geographic region. A population was defined as a locality containing at least ten individuals of Hordeum murinum. Sampling sites were generally separated by a minimum distance of 1 km to increase the likelihood of representing distinct populations. Within each population, up to ten individual plants were sampled randomly, with a minimum spacing of 5 m between sampled individuals. Geographic coordinates were recorded in the field using handheld GPS devices or smartphone-based GPS applications. Local habitat characteristics, including vegetation cover and soil properties, were recorded at each site. Seeds and soil samples were collected for subsequent laboratory analyses.

| Control de Calidad | Taxonomic identity of sampled plants was verified using standard regional floras and taxonomic references. Because Hordeum murinum belongs to a cytologically variable species complex, ploidy level of sampled populations was determined using flow cytometry. Only exclusively tetraploid populations identified as Hordeum murinum subsp. murinum were retained in the primary dataset. Geographic coordinates were checked for consistency and obvious spatial errors prior to publication. Trait measurements and laboratory analyses followed standardized protocols across all sampled populations to ensure comparability of data collected throughout the study area. |
