1. SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVE The aim of this project is to analyze both individual and joint effects of climate warming and natural disturbances on forest vegetation in temperate mountain forests. This project pursues to examine the impact of climate changes and nitrogen deposition on forest vegetation in undisturbed areas (Task 1.). We would like to check that the trajectories of the changes show similarities after large-scale disturbances (Task 2.). Finally, the effect of microclimate and the impact of conditions in the forest interior will be examined in the context of changes in the forest vegetation of temperate forests. The novelty of our research is a methodology that combines twin plots, vegetation resurvey on quasi-permanent plots and tracing the recent history of natural disturbance based on photointerpretation. 2. METHODS The proposed research use new methodological concepts - the ‘twin plots’ approach, basis on quasi-permanent plots of historical data. Re-performing floristic inventories (called vegetation resurvey) in approximate locations could be a very effective method to analyze changes in communities. Using historical relevés made vegetation research much easier than they were before, and removed the limitation of having a series of research in permanent plots. All tasks of the proposed study will be conducted in the Tatra National Park (Poland). In this study, we are going to re-survey plots in quasi-permanent plots documented in the previous phytosociological studies published between 1923 and 1928. This proposal refers to these papers as the baseline survey. Altogether, the authors documented 93 plots (relevés) in forest communities dominated by Picea abies, Fagus sylvatica or Pinus mugo, including three altitudinal zones. In the first step, all plots will be resurveyed in the field with sampled soil cores (comparison of the changes in plant species richness and diversity). The second part of the research is to perform the plots after natural disturbances from the ‘twin plot’ idea. We will perform comparisons of changes for the whole dataset involving disturbed and undisturbed areas, but also separately for forest types and considering the type of substrate. To analyze altitudinal shifts in plant species, we will first use the selected modelling technique to calculate the altitudinal optima of plant species in baseline and recent surveys. For involving the species traits, we will use functional analysis of plant traits based on big databases, but we also plan to benefit from bioindication. To characterize the impact of different types of disturbance on forest communities, each plot will be analysed for the occurrence of disturbances. For this purpose, an information vector layer will be used, created as a result of photointerpretation of aerial photos and satellite images from the past. Microclimate in forest interior may buffer effects of global warming and depend on canopy closure affected by disturbance history. In each plot, we will record air temperature and humidity every hour for two years, using sensors with an accuracy of ± 0.5 °C. We will aggregate the hourly temperature data into three daily temperature statistics: minimum, mean and maximum daily temperature, and analogously for humidity. 3. IMPACT OF THE PROJECT The results from the resurvey of forest vegetation are designed to shine a light on the mechanism of species' responses to environmental changes. Due to the time of global changes, species shits after one century could give information about the directions of the changes and site-specific reactions. Studies about natural disturbances in the forest are focusing on communities' resistance to the changes. The frequency and intensity of natural changes increase due to global changes. The differences in species responses in undisturbed and disturbed areas may show the significance of the disturbances for the vegetation changes. Microclimate measurement will tell us how patches of the forest interior may affect both: changes in impact and resistance.
